THIS IS A STATE PARK LAKE AND PROPERTY.  PLEASE ADHERE PARK'S RULES:

ABSOLUTELY NO SWIMMING IN LAKE PRIOR TO EVENT AS NO LIFEGUARDS ARE ON DUTY

If you violate any of these rules, you will be banned from the race and no refund will be issued.

Water temperature in the past has been around 75 degrees.

When signing up online, consider these options:

ENTRY FEE Refund Insurance:  You may purchase this additional option for $10 per event.  Only participating events apply and must be purchased at the time of registering for the event(s).  Refund insurance allows you to opt for an 80% refund of the ENTRY FEE up to 48 hours PRIOR to the event start time.  All other fees paid towards to the event do not apply including but not limited to one day insurance, other additional options, the refund insurance fee, or processing fees.  The refund insurance is transferrable should you opt to transfer your entry per the Transfer Policy at least 15 DAYS PRIOR to both events.  To opt out, send an email at least 48 hours PRIOR to the event to support@piranha-sports.com.  Refunds may take up to two weeks after requested event to process.


Run Race Belts - Allows you to attach your run bib #s and a quick get away in transition area by affixing number and belt via belt clip.  Will be handed out at race packet pickup.

Make a $10, $20, or $50 donation to the volunteer group(s) that help out at the event. Volunteer group(s) can include boy scout groups, motorcycle clubs, triathlon clubs, etc. 

Swim Warm-Up and Safety Clinic -
 
Following the first timers meeting on the day before, all aprticipants are offerred the opportunity to swim in the same water* they will compete in, learn proper etiquette in the water, and learn proper spotting methods. The intention of this clinic is to make sure that the swim the next day is as safe as possible, help create confidence in participants, and provide the opportunity to get a feel of the aquatic environment they will be racing in the next day. Costs vary depending when you sign up.

*The swim area may be restricted as to ensure proper supervision for everyone's safety. Lifeguards and race director have full authority to establish swim zones, modify, or cancel as condition(s) and permits warrant. Any athlete who ignores the lifeguards', coach's, or race director's directions, will forfeit their race entry with no refunds.

Course

SPRINT COURSE:

Run - 2 miles - duathlon's firat leg - Out and back course.  Flat and Fast.

  • Start near transition area.  Simulataneous start with the triathlon's first wave.
  • Stay to the right of each other.  Some grass and some paved road.  The 1 mile mark is at the first water table at mile 1 of the run course - this is where you make a right to left u-turn.
  • Run into Transition Area

Swim - 1/2 mile -

  • Expected water temperature around 76 degrees.  Wetsuits allowed and optional if water temperature is 78 degrees or less taken on race morning.  Come prepared with a wetsuit just in case.
  • Swim Cut Off Rule.  All participants are expected to be able to complete the swim discipline maintaining a steady consistent stroke and able to maintain on course.  Lifeguards are provided for emergency situations and to prevent swimmers from drowning.  Any swimmer who is in constant need of aid from lifeguards along the swim is considered to be a hazard to themselves and other swimmers and has not prepared properly for the race (this includes breaks, and redirection on course).  If a lifeguard at any point feels an athlete is taking too much attention, the lifeguard reserves the right to remove the athlete from the race.  This removal will result in a DNF (Did Not Finish) from the entire race (the athlete will not be allowed to compete in the bike or run) at which point athlete must hand in their timing chip to lifeguard or designated staff person. 

Bike - 19.5 miles - Flat and Fast.

  • Exit Transition area and head out the main entrance of Lums Pond.
  • Right out of Main Entrance of Lums Pond onto Howell School Road.
  • Right onto Route 71 (Red Lion Road).  Sharp turn!!  Slow down!!
  • Left onto Chesapeake City Road.
  • Right onto Frazer Road.
  • Left onto Denny Road.  Sharp turn!!  Slow down!!
  • Left onto Steele Road.
  • Left onto Chesapeake City Road.
  • Right onto Route 71 (Red Lion Road)
  • Left onto Howell School Road before the RR tracks.
  • Left into Main Entrance of Lums Pond and head back to beach are (area #1) at the Transition Area.

Run - 3.3 miles - final leg for both duathlon and triathlon.  Out, a counter clock-wise loop, and back course.  Stay to the right at all times.  Some grass, a bit of cross country (relatively smooth), and some paved road. 

  • Head out of TA along tree line in area #1.
  • Right throughout cut-out in the woods (becomes trail at this point)
  • Right onto Old Buck Jersey Road (section in Lums Pond State Park where there are no vehicles and deep in the woods)
  • Right along trailway once come upon Dog Training area and then stay on trailway headed towards Primative Camping Area.
  • At juncture near this Primative Camping Area (about 1.5 miles into the run), stay straight/left to continue counter-clockwise in this loop.
  • At this point you have about 1.8 miles to go
  • You will come upon Old Buck Jersey Road again within the State Park.  At this point, it's straight back towards TA in the same direction you came out.
  • Finish line will bear to the right near TA.


HALF COURSE:

Duathlon first leg Run course - 3.3 miles - Out, a counter clock-wise loop, and bakc course. 

Swim for half - 1.2 miles - in water start

Bike for half - 56 miles - Flat and Fast.   This bike course is now official as of August 6, 2014.  We will not be able to utilize Reedy Point Bridge since it is still under repair.

  • Exit Transition area and head out the main entrance of Lums Pond
  • Right out of Main Entrance of Lums Pond onto Howell School Road
  • Right onto Route 71 (Red Lion Road).  Sharp turn!! Slow down!!
    • You are now at the intersection of Rt. 71 (Red Lion Road) and Howell School Road - Ocean Mart Deli is located here.  This is the beginning of a segment which consists of a loop and out and back segment which you will do 2 times.
  • On Route 71 section from Primative Camping access to Summit Marina will be coned off to prepare for run course.  You may ride within these cones in the shoulder and are encouraged to do so.  However, should you see runners on this segment which would be highly unlikely during your second lap, please to look carefuly before merging onto the main road as roadways are not closed to vehicular traffic.  It is the responsibility of the cyclists to observe and obey all traffic patterns.
  • Left onto Chesapeake City Road
  • Right onto Frazer Road
  • Left onto Denny Road.  Sharp turn.  Slow down!
  • Left onto Steele Road
  • Left onto Chesapeake City Road
  • Right onto Route 71
  • Immediately after RR tracks, turn right onto Kirkwood-St. Georges Road
  • Right onto Main Street in St. Georges
  • Left onto Delaware Street in the small town of St. Georges.  Sharp turn.  Slow down!
  • Right onto Cox Neck Road
  • At the beginning of Delaware City line, U-turn on Cox Neck Road near Nowland Road
  • Head back on Cox Neck Road towards St. Georges.
  • Bike water bottle/sport drink  (HEED by Hammer Nutrition) exchange being planned soon either near Gunning Bedford Middle School or Southern Elementary School located on Cox Neck Road.   Throw old and used bottle aside, slow down, and grab bottle while continuing to ride. 
  • Left onto Clarks Corner Road (also Delaware St.)
  • Right onto Main Street in St. Georges.  Sharp turn.  Slow down!
  • Left onto Kirkwood-St. Georges Road
  • Left onto Route 71
  • Cross RR tracks
    • You are now back at the intersection of Rt. 71 (Red Lion Road) and Howell School Road - Ocean Mart Deli is located here. 
    • Continue straight to repeat the loop and out and back segment for the second and final loop.
    • After the second time of doing the above segment, see below
  • After two laps of the above segment, Turn right onto Howell School Road
  • Turn left back onto Main Entrance of Lums Pond State Park
  • Proceed back towards Area #1 to TA.

Run for half - 13.1 miles - New for 2014 as it will all be within Lums Pond State Park.  Combination of smooth trails, grass, crush n run, macadam.  95% shade!!  Runners should always stay to the right at all times throughout the entire run in this primarily out and back course.  Water and HEED by Hammer Nutrition planned at about every 1 to 1.5 miles.  1 Porta Potty about every 2 miles. 

  • Most of the course per map below is primarily on the "BLUE" Little Jersey Trail.
  • Head out of TA along tree line in area #1.
  • Right throughout cut-out in the woods (becomes trail at this point)
  • Right onto Old Buck Jersey Road (section in Lums Pond State Park where there are no vehicles and deep in the woods)
  • Right along trailway once come upon Dog Training area and then stay on trailway headed towards Primative Camping Area.
  • At juncture near this Primative Camping Area (POST #131) AND (about 1.5 miles into the run), turn right past Primative Camping Area and stay on trail along tree-line and farm field.
  • Stay on main "BLUE" Little Jersey Trail until you approach Campground.
  • At campground, (POST #94) stay left and continue on "BLUE" LIttle Jersey Trail.
  • Follow the "BLUE" Little Jersey Trail all the way to the north west corner segment of Lums Pond State Park.  After you cross the dam berm of Lums Pond at this point, you will make a right to left u-turn.
  • Head back in same general direction except where there is a split rail fence (see insert photo on map below).  Run around this split rail fence as you head onto macadam road past two private homes.  Then you will turn left back into trail to pick up again back on the "BLUE" Little Jersey Trail.
  • Head back in same direction up to (POST #131) near the Primative Camping Area and bear right onto the "BLUE" Little Jersey Trail.
  • Past mile 1 again (1 mile to go!!) and head back same direction to race finish.

  • 5pm to 7pm - Packet PIckup
  • 5:30pm - First Timers Meeting. "Open to all registered participants." This is an opportunity to review logistics of the race with a Piranha Sports staff member. It will involve reviewing packets, chip timing, transition area, rules, and tips. BRING YOUR BIKE AND HELMET for optional inspection at early packet pickup.
  • 6:30pm - Swim Warm-Up and Safety Clinic for Friday at 6:30pm- available for Saturday racers only.

Satuday, September 12, 2015

  • 5:30am - 6:45am - Transition area opened. Located at area #1 of Lums Pond State Park. For Mapuest purposes, try 1068 Howell School Road, Bear, DE 19701. Late packet pickup. Body marking.
  • 6:45am - Mandatory pre-race meeting. If arriving after this time, you will be required to pay for your own parking - please inform your family and friends who arrive later to watch you.
  • 7:00am - National Anthem.
  • WAVES ARE based on last years and subject to change.
  • 7:15am - Wave #1. SPRINT Duathlon Starts.  Mass Wave Start. 
  • 7:20am - Wave #2. SPRINT Distance Triathlon Starts. All Males; Clydesdales.  
  • 7:25am - Wave #3.  Sprint Distance Tri.  All Females; Athenas.  
  • 8:00am - Wave #4. HALF Iron Duathlon Starts.  Mass Wave Start. 
  • 8:05am - Wave #5. HALF IRON Distance Triathlon Starts. All Males; Clydesdales.  
  • 8:10am - Wave #6.  HALF IRON Distance Tri.  All Females; Athenas.  
  • 9:45am - SPRINT Official Results posted for purposes of awards.  This is your opportunity to review your own results. Once awards ceremony begins, all results are final.
  • 10:00am - SPRINT Post race party/awards. Awards will not be mailed.
  • 10:00pm - SPRINT Transition area closed.
  • 1:15pm - HALF IRON cut off time for bike leg. 14mph average for this flat bike course.
  • 2:30pm - HALF IRON Cut off time for the run at the Run Turn around (approximately 6.55 miles).  If you do not make it by this time, you will be asked to walk/run directly back to transition area (1 mile away via main road in the park).  If you are pulled off the course, you may not continue back onto the race as race management will begin clearing course and volunteers will be dismissed.   Race Director/management has the right to adjust this cut off time as necessary. 
  • 2:45pm - HALF IRON Official Results posted for purposes of awards. This is your opportunity to review your own results. Once awards ceremony begins, all results are final.
  • 3:00pm - HALF IRON Post race party/awards. Awards will not be mailed.
  • 3:00pm - HALF IRON Transition area closed.
  • 4:00pm - All Half IRON Racers must complete race by this time.

Race director/management may alter any part or distance of the event as dictated by event day conditions, such as weather.  Race director/management may also decide in the interest of athlete safety remove you from the course if cut off times are not met and may also alter cut off times as necessary.

Refund Policy
No Refunds, No Tranfers, No Deferrals Under Any Circumstances.  

absolutely NO refunds will be made for any reason.  REFERRED TO AS “ENTRY FEES” ABOVE AND INCLUDES ENTRY FEES, PARTICIPANT SHIRTS, UPGRADED PRODUCTS, ANY OTHER AMENITIES, INSURANCE, AND ONLINE ADMINISTRATIVE FEES.  MUST BE PRESENT TO RECEIVE ANY ITEMS as leftovers are distributed on day of race.  WE DO NOT SHIP.  ENTRY FEES CANNOT BE  TRANSFERRED TO OTHER PERSONS OR APPLIED TOWARD future PIRANHA SPORTS EVENTS.  Selling your race entry slot is strictly prohibited by piranha sports.
If you do sell your race slot, you will be disqualified from the race and you, as well as the entrant who purchased your slot, will be unable to race in another Piranha Sports event for a minimum of 2 years. Piranha Sports reserves the right to reject any entry if a valid photo ID is not presented at race packet pick-up.  There is NO rain date for the event.  In cases of inclement weather, natural disaster, acts of God, acts of war or other unforeseen extraordinary circumstances, management reserves the right to cancel the event and/or modify the race course for safety concerns. Under such circumstances, there will be absolutely no refunds or transfer of entries to future Piranha Sports events. Each athlete must accept any such risk of their entry fee paid including other amenities paid for such as participate shirts, upgrade products, insurance, and online administrative fees.  All monies collected are used to develop and produce the event, including all race supplies, staffing, and administration. We pledge to make every effort to produce a fair, safe and exciting event for all.  Management reserves the right to reject or accept a race entry for any reason.  By signing up for this race, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to the terms listed on this page.

Refund Policy Related to Cancellation/Modification by Race Management Or Opt Out by Athlete:
I understand that event management, its affiliates, and outside agencies, monitor for various aspects of the event.  Should any portion(s) of the event be cancelled or modified there will be no refunds, credits, or deferrals.  Should athlete opt out of any portion(s) of the event for whatever reason, athlete may not substitute or race portion(s) of the event unless this has been established as the new and modified course.  Likewise, no refunds, credits, or deferrals will be allowed.  Athlete understands and accepts that a cancellation or modification can occur up to and including race start time or during its progress.  Athlete also understands and accepts that event management reserves the right to amend this policy at any time.

Spectator Information
Lums Pond State Park ~ Area #1 offers a large field with ideal spectator areas for watching the swim, transition, bike start and finish as well as run start and finish. Bring the kids and make plans to spend the day at Lums Pond enjoying activities such as fishing, paddle boats, picnic area and playground.

Parking
Spectator (as well as athlete) parking is available at Area #1 and Area #2 at Lums Pond State Park. Parking attendants will be available to assist you with parking. Also, please be aware that once the race begins, the road leading in and out of Lums Pond State Park will be used by participants as it is part of the race course.

Athlete Support
Bring your cow bells, noise makers, posters, banners, and other items to cheer on your favorite athlete. Please keep in mind that spectators are not allowed to provide any outside assistance to the athletes. Outside assistance can result in penalties and possible disqualification. Outside assistance can include but is not limited to: transition area assistance, running or riding along with the athlete (pacing), handing off water bottles, etc. The Piranha Sports staff and volunteers will provide assistance as needed and allowed. As well, there will be no time during the event when spectators will be allowed in the secure transition area. If your athlete forgot an item for the transition area, please ask a Piranha Sports Staff member or volunteer to assist you in getting that item to the athlete.

Spectator Control
The Piranha Sports Staff and volunteers have your athlete’s safety and security as their primary responsibility. Therefore, there may be times during the course of the event that we will need to provide directions to spectators if we feel that the athletes do not have a clear and unobstructed path. Please pay close attention to these directions/instructions so that we are able to maintain the safety of every athlete.

Kids and Dogs
The Piranha Sports Staff loves having kids and dogs at the events. The kids are our future and the dogs are just great. If you do bring your children and/or pets, please keep a close eye on them. Do not allow them to venture onto any of the roadways particularly near the mount/dismount area. As well, if your children bring bikes, please ensure that they are wearing helmets at all times.

Just as a reminder, the food and beverages provided by Piranha Sports are for athletes and volunteers only.

Other Notes
Lums Pond is a State Park and a take-in/take-out policy is in effect. Please be sure to take all trash with you and help keep the park clean.
