Join us for the Diamondman Challenge Weekend. We are excited to combine an exciting weekend for you with the following formats - please see itinerary for specific times:

Saturday - Diamondman Challenge YOUTH Triathlon (formerly Lums Pond Youth Tri)
Saturday - Diamondman Challenge ADULT Sprint Tri & Du (formerly Lums Pond Tri & Du)
Saturday - Swim Warm-Up and Safety Clinic and Early Packet Pickup for Half Iron Racers.

Sunday - Diamondman Challenge Half Iron Tri (formerly Delaware Diamondman Triathlon) and Half Iron Du (new this year).

Challenge yourself to any of these races OR on both days!!




If you violate any of these rules, you will be banned from the race and no refund will be issued.

Water temperature in the past has been around 75 degrees.

Piranha Sports

Wetsuit Rule
All Piranha Sports events will allow wetsuits if the water temperature is 78 degrees or less. Water temperatures are taken on race morning.

In the event the water temperature is 79 degrees or higher, no wetsuits will be allowed.
Event Summary
  • "Race Weekend for the Entire Family" - Sign your child up for the race the same day at this race. Also, consider racing at Diamondman the next day and challenge yourself to a double!!
  • An Escape from School Youth Series Event
  • A Greater Atlantic Multisport Series Event - for adult races only.
  • A Greater Atlantic Club Challenge Event
  • Beach swim start, fast and flat bike course, flat and fast run - one of the fastest short distance triathlon and duathlon courses
  • Tri and DU will be separate awards
  • Boys Age Groups (Top 3 in each)
    • 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14
  • Girls Age Groups (Top 3 in each)
    • 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14

Tri: Swim - 100 yards - point to point swim. Beach start.
Du: Run - 0.4 mile - on grass

Bike - 2.4 miles. On controlled road.

Run - 0.4 mile - on grass

"Fun Run" - same run course immediately following the triathlon

  • Rt 1 and 13 North
  • Go over the Senator William V. Roth, Jr. Bridge (Rt 1 Bridge) - Toll bridge
  • First Exit after bridge is Exit 152.
  • Take Exit 152, turn left onto Route 72, West toward Newark
  • Go for 1.4 miles and turn left onto Route 71 South (Red Lion Road)
  • Go for 1.2 miles and turn right onto Howell School Road
  • Go for 1.8 miles and turn left into the main entrance of Lums Pond State Park
  • Stay on main road of State Park for 1.5 miles to Beach Area (Area #1)
  • Will have to pay entrance fee per vehicle


  • Stay on Route 896 South for approximatley 5.5 miles (you will cross over Route 40)
  • Left onto Howell School Road
  • Go for 0.3 mile and turn right into main entrance of Lums Pond State Park
  • Stay on main road of State Park for 1.5 miles to Beach Area (Area #1)

Friday, September 6, 2013


    No packet pickup on Friday.  All packet pickups will be on Saturday.

Saturday, September 7, 2013 - YOUTH and SPRINT Distance Races

  • 5:30am - 7:00am - Packet Pickup and LAST MINUTE BIKE AND HELMET optional inspections.
    6:45am - All athletes AND spectators/family members must be in the park by this time due to road closure for kids race within the park itself.
    5:30am - 7:00am - Transition area opened. Located in Area #1 of Lums Pond State Park. Late packet pickup. Body marking.
    Cheer the kids on at the first Escape from School Youth Series Triathlon Event at 7:15am.

  • 7:15am - All Youth Duathletes start.
  • 7:17am - 13-14 Year Olds. Pink Caps.
  • 7:19am - 11-12 Year Olds. Green Caps.
  • 7:21am - 9-10 Year Olds. White Caps.
  • 7:23am - 7-8 Year Olds. Purple Caps.
  • 7:50am - Awards Ceremony for Kids
  • 8:15am - Start of Adult Tri.
  • 8:15am - Wave #6. Duathlon's First Run - ALL DUATHLETES start at the same time in a mass start.
  • 8:20am - Wave #7. All Females; Athenas. Orange Caps.
    8:25am - Wave #8. All Males; Clydesdales. Yellow Caps.
    10:30am - Official results posted. This is your opportunity to review your own results. Once awards ceremony begins, all results are final.
    10:45am - Post race party/awards. Awards will not be mailed.
    10:45am - Transition area closed.
  • 11:00am - 1:30pm - Packet Pickup and LAST MINUTE BIKE HELMET optional inspections for Diamondman Half Iron participants at Lums Pond State Park - Area #1.
  • 11:30am - First Timers Meeting. "Open to all registered participants." This is an opportunity to review logistics of the race with a Piranha Sports staff member. It will involve reviewing packets, chip timing, transition area, rules, and tips. BRING YOUR BIKE AND HELMET for optional inspection at early packet pickup.
  • 12:30pm - Swim Warm-Up and Safety Clinic for Saturday at 12:30pm - available for Sunday racers only.

Sign up for this under Additional Options. Piranha Sports has teamed up with Triton Water Rescue, our lifeguard team. Rick Lill, certified lifeguard of Triton will be conducting this Swim Warm-Up and Safety Clinic. Following the first timers meeting on the day before, all aprticipants are offerred the opportunity to swim in the same water* they will compete in, learn proper etiquette in the water, and learn proper spotting methods. The intention of this clinic is to make sure that the swim the next day is as safe as possible, help create confidence in participants, and provide the opportunity to get a feel of the aquautic environment they will be racing in the next day.


*The swim area may be restricted as to ensure proper supervision for everyone's safety. Lifeguards and race director have full authority to establish swim zones, modify, or cancel as condition(s) and permits warrant. Any athlete who ignores the lifeguards', coach's, or race director's directions, will forfeit their race entry with no refunds.

Sunday, September 8, 2013 - HALF IRON TRI AND HALF IRON DU


  • 5:30am - 6:45am - Transition area opened. Located at area #1 of Lums Pond State Park. For Mapuest purposes, try 1068 Howell School Road, Bear, DE 19701. Late packet pickup. Body marking.
  • 6:45am - Mandatory pre-race meeting. If arriving after this time, you will be required to pay for your own parking - please inform your family and friends who arrive later to watch you.
  • 7:00am - National Anthem.
  • 7:15am - Wave #1. Duathlon Half Iron Distance Starts (new for 2013). Mass Wave Start.
  • 7:20am - Wave #2. Half Iron Triathlon Starts. All Females; Athenas.  Orange Caps.
  • 7:25am - Wave #3.  All Males; Clydesdales.  Yellow Caps.
  • 12:30pm - Cut off time for bike leg. 14mph average for this flat bike course if started on the bike by 8:30am.
  • 2:00pm - Official Results posted for purposes of awards. This is your opportunity to review your own results. Once awards ceremony begins, all results are final.
  • 2:15pm - Post race party/awards. Awards will not be mailed.
  • 2:15pm - Transition area closed.

Race director/management may alter any part or distance of the event as dictated by event day conditions, such as weather.


Refund Policy
No Refunds, No Tranfers, No Deferrals Under Any Circumstances.

Absolutely NO refunds will be made for any reason. REFERRED TO AS “ENTRY FEES” ABOVE AND INCLUDES ENTRY FEES, PARTICIPANT SHIRTS, UPGRADED PRODUCTS, ANY OTHER AMENITIES, INSURANCE, AND ONLINE ADMINISTRATIVE FEES. MUST BE PRESENT TO RECEIVE ANY ITEMS as leftovers are distributed on day of race. WE DO NOT SHIP. ENTRY FEES CANNOT BE TRANSFERRED TO OTHER PERSONS OR APPLIED TOWARD future PIRANHA SPORTS EVENTS. Selling your race entry slot is strictly prohibited by piranha sports. If you do sell your race slot, you will be disqualified from the race and you, as well as the entrant who purchased your slot, will be unable to race in another Piranha Sports event for a minimum of 2 years. Piranha Sports reserves the right to reject any entry if a valid photo ID is not presented at race packet pick-up. There is NO rain date for the event. In cases of inclement weather, natural disaster, acts of God, acts of war or other unforeseen extraordinary circumstances, management reserves the right to cancel the event and/or modify the race course for safety concerns. Under such circumstances, there will be absolutely no refunds or transfer of entries to future Piranha Sports events. Each athlete must accept any such risk of their entry fee paid including other amenities paid for such as participate shirts, upgrade products, insurance, and online administrative fees. All monies collected are used to develop and produce the event, including all race supplies, staffing, and administration. We pledge to make every effort to produce a fair, safe and exciting event for all. Management reserves the right to reject or accept a race entry for any reason. By signing up for this race, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to the terms listed on this page.

Spectator Information
Lums Pond State Park ~ Area #1 offers a large field with ideal spectator areas for watching the swim, transition, bike start and finish as well as run start and finish. Bring the kids and make plans to spend the day at Lums Pond enjoying activities such as fishing, paddle boats, picnic area and playground.

Spectator (as well as athlete) parking is available at Area #1 and Area #2 at Lums Pond State Park. Parking attendants will be available to assist you with parking. Also, please be aware that once the race begins, the road leading in and out of Lums Pond State Park will be used by participants as it is part of the race course.

Athlete Support
Bring your cow bells, noise makers, posters, banners, and other items to cheer on your favorite athlete. Please keep in mind that spectators are not allowed to provide any outside assistance to the athletes. Outside assistance can result in penalties and possible disqualification. Outside assistance can include but is not limited to: transition area assistance, running or riding along with the athlete (pacing), handing off water bottles, etc. The Piranha Sports staff and volunteers will provide assistance as needed and allowed. As well, there will be no time during the event when spectators will be allowed in the secure transition area. If your athlete forgot an item for the transition area, please ask a Piranha Sports Staff member or volunteer to assist you in getting that item to the athlete.

Spectator Control
The Piranha Sports Staff and volunteers have your athlete’s safety and security as their primary responsibility. Therefore, there may be times during the course of the event that we will need to provide directions to spectators if we feel that the athletes do not have a clear and unobstructed path. Please pay close attention to these directions/instructions so that we are able to maintain the safety of every athlete.

Kids and Dogs
The Piranha Sports Staff loves having kids and dogs at the events. The kids are our future and the dogs are just great. If you do bring your children and/or pets, please keep a close eye on them. Do not allow them to venture onto any of the roadways particularly near the mount/dismount area. As well, if your children bring bikes, please ensure that they are wearing helmets at all times.

Post Race Food
Just as a reminder, the food and beverages provided by Piranha Sports are for athletes and volunteers only.

Other Notes
Lums Pond is a State Park and a take-in/take-out policy is in effect. Please be sure to take all trash with you and help keep the park clean.
