ABSOLUTELY NO SWIMMING IN LAKE PRIOR TO EVENT AS NO LIFEGUARDS ARE ON DUTY

If you violate any of these rules, you will be banned from the race and no refund will be issued.

Water temperature in the past has been around 75 degrees.

Additional Options
When signing up online, consider these options:

Run Race Belts - Allows you to attach your run bib #s and a quick get away in transition area by affixing number and belt via belt clip.  Will be handed out at race packet pickup.  Cost:  $10.00.

Make a $10, $20, or $50 donation to the volunteer group(s) that help out at the event. Volunteer group(s) can include boy scout groups, motorcycle clubs, triathlon clubs, etc.


Swim Warm-Up and Safety Clinic -
  Presented by:   
Sign up for this under Additional Options. Piranha Sports has teamed up with Triton Water Rescue, our lifeguard team.  Rick Lill, certified lifeguard of Triton will be conducting this Swim Warm-Up and Safety Clinic. Following the first timers meeting on the day before, all aprticipants are offerred the opportunity to swim in the same water* they will compete in, learn proper etiquette in the water, and learn proper spotting methods. The intention of this clinic is to make sure that the swim the next day is as safe as possible, help create confidence in participants, and provide the opportunity to get a feel of the aquatic environment they will be racing in the next day. Cost: $17.00

*The swim area may be restricted as to ensure proper supervision for everyone's safety. Lifeguards and race director have full authority to establish swim zones, modify, or cancel as condition(s) and permits warrant. Any athlete who ignores the lifeguards', coach's, or race director's directions, will forfeit their race entry with no refunds.

HALF COURSE:

Duathlon first leg Run course - 3.3 miles - Out, a counter clock-wise loop, and bakc course. 

Swim for half - 1.2 miles - in water start 

  • Expected water temperature around 74 degrees.  Wetsuits allowed and optional if water temperature is 78 degrees or less taken on race morning.  Come prepared with a wetsuit just in case. 
  • Swim Cut Off Rule.  All participants are expected to be able to complete the swim discipline maintaining a steady consistent stroke and able to maintain on course.  Lifeguards are provided for emergency situations and to prevent swimmers from drowning.  Any swimmer who is in constant need of aid from lifeguards along the swim is considered to be a hazard to themselves and other swimmers and has not prepared properly for the race (this includes breaks, and redirection on course).  If a lifeguard at any point feels an athlete is taking too much attention, the lifeguard reserves the right to remove the athlete from the race.  This removal will result in a DNF (Did Not Finish) from the entire race (the athlete will not be allowed to compete in the bike or run) at which point athlete must hand in their timing chip to lifeguard or designated staff person. 

Bike for half - 56 miles - Flat and Fast.   Back to the one loop course to be posted soon. 

  • Exit Transition area and head out the main entrance of Lums Pond
  • Right out of Main Entrance of Lums Pond onto Howell School Road
  • Right onto Route 71 (Red Lion Road).  Sharp turn!! Slow down!!
    • You are now at the intersection of Rt. 71 (Red Lion Road) and Howell School Road - Ocean Mart Deli is located here.  This is the beginning of a segment which consists of a loop and out and back segment which you will do 2 times.
  • On Route 71 section from Primative Camping access to Summit Marina will be coned off to prepare for run course.  You may ride within these cones in the shoulder and are encouraged to do so.  However, should you see runners on this segment which would be highly unlikely during your second lap, please to look carefuly before merging onto the main road as roadways are not closed to vehicular traffic.  It is the responsibility of the cyclists to observe and obey all traffic patterns.
  • Left onto Chesapeake City Road
  • Right onto Frazer Road
  • Left onto Denny Road.  Sharp turn.  Slow down!
  • Left onto Steele Road
  • Left onto Chesapeake City Road
  • Right onto Route 71
  • Immediately after RR tracks, turn right onto Kirkwood-St. Georges Road
  • Right onto Main Street in St. Georges
  • Left onto Delaware Street in the small town of St. Georges.  Sharp turn.  Slow down!
  • Right onto Cox Neck Road
  • At the beginning of Delaware City line, U-turn on Cox Neck Road near Nowland Road
  • Head back on Cox Neck Road towards St. Georges.
  • Bike water bottle/sport drink  (Fluid) exchange being planned soon either near Gunning Bedford Middle School or Southern Elementary School located on Cox Neck Road.   Throw old and used bottle aside, slow down, and grab bottle while continuing to ride. 
  • Left onto Clarks Corner Road (also Delaware St.)
  • Right onto Main Street in St. Georges.  Sharp turn.  Slow down!
  • Left onto Kirkwood-St. Georges Road
  • Left onto Route 71
  • Cross RR tracks
    • You are now back at the intersection of Rt. 71 (Red Lion Road) and Howell School Road - Ocean Mart Deli is located here. 
    • Continue straight to repeat the loop and out and back segment for the second and final loop.
    • After the second time of doing the above segment, see below
  • After two laps of the above segment, Turn right onto Howell School Road
  • Turn left back onto Main Entrance of Lums Pond State Park
  • Proceed back towards Area #1 to TA.

Run for half - 13.1 miles - New for 2013 as it will combine some wide and relatively smooth trails, roadway, and the C&D Canal.Please plan your footwear accordingly.  Runners should always stay to the right at all times throughout the entire run in this primarily out and back course.  Water, Fluid, hammergel planned at about every 1 to 1.5 miles.  Involves some grass, a bit of cross country (relatively smooth), and some paved road.

  • Head out of TA along tree line in area #1.
  • Right throughout cut-out in the woods (becomes trail at this point)
  • Right onto Old Buck Jersey Road (section in Lums Pond State Park where there are no vehicles and deep in the woods)
  • Right along trailway once come upon Dog Training area and then stay on trailway headed towards Primative Camping Area.
  • At juncture near this Primative Camping Area (about 1.5 miles into the run), turn right past Primative Camping Area and heads towards Route 71.
  • At Route 71 (Red Lion Road) stay on the right hand side (the shoulder) for 0.8 mile.  This section will be coned off for runners and some bikers may use this shoulder for the biking portion and no overlap anticipated.  Estimated time of runners between 10am and 2:30pm on this section.  Estimated time of a few cyclists in the back is between 10:10am and 10:30am.
  • At the end of the coned off section on Route 71, you will cross over Route 71 towards Summit Marina.  FOR YOUR SAFETY, DO NOT CROSS OVER ROUTE 71 AT ANY OTHER SECTION OTHER THAN HERE AT ENTRANCE/EXIT OF SUMMIT MARINA.
  • Head onto roadway of Summit Marina and stay to the left passing boats in the water on your right.
  • Slightly uphill, you will see paved running path on the left that takes you towards C&D Canal
  • Continue on C&D Canal paved running path (remember stay to the right at all times) for about 2.4 miles.
  • U-Turn at this point (located about 1/4 mile from the Route 1 Highway Overpass).  Must U-Turn from right to left (again always stay to the right side when running).
  • Head back same direction until you meet the juncture near Primative Camping Area (you have about 1.8 miles to go).
  • Turn right at the juncture along trails of Lums Pond which will take you back towards the Old Buck Jersey Road.  At this point, it's straight back towards TA in the same direction you came out.
  • Finish line will bear to the right near TA.

Saturday, September 7, 2013 - YOUTH and SPRINT Distance Races

  • 5:30am - 7:00am - Packet Pickup and LAST MINUTE BIKE AND HELMET optional inspections.
    6:45am - All athletes AND spectators/family members must be in the park by this time due to road closure for kids race within the park itself.
    5:30am - 7:00am - Transition area opened. Located in Area #1 of Lums Pond State Park. Late packet pickup. Body marking.
    Cheer the kids on at the first Escape from School Youth Series Triathlon Event at 7:15am.

  • 7:15am - All Youth Duathletes start.
  • 7:17am - 13-14 Year Olds. Pink Caps.
  • 7:19am - 11-12 Year Olds. Green Caps.
  • 7:21am - 9-10 Year Olds. White Caps.
  • 7:23am - 7-8 Year Olds. Purple Caps.
  • 7:50am - Awards Ceremony for Kids

  • 11:30am - First Timers Meeting. "Open to all registered participants." This is an opportunity to review logistics of the race with a Piranha Sports staff member. It will involve reviewing packets, chip timing, transition area, rules, and tips. BRING YOUR BIKE AND HELMET for optional inspection at early packet pickup.
  • 12:30pm - Swim Warm-Up and Safety Clinic for Saturday at 12:30pm - available for Sunday racers only.

Sunday, September 8, 2013 - HALF IRON TRI AND HALF IRON DU

 

  • 5:30am - 6:45am - Transition area opened. Located at area #1 of Lums Pond State Park. For Mapuest purposes, try 1068 Howell School Road, Bear, DE 19701. Late packet pickup. Body marking.
  • 6:45am - Mandatory pre-race meeting. If arriving after this time, you will be required to pay for your own parking - please inform your family and friends who arrive later to watch you.
  • 7:00am - National Anthem.
  • 7:15am - Wave #1. Duathlon Half Iron Distance Starts (new for 2013). Mass Wave Start.
  • 7:20am - Wave #2. Half Iron Triathlon Starts. All Females; Athenas.  Orange Caps.
  • 7:25am - Wave #3.  All Males; Clydesdales.  Yellow Caps.
  • 12:30pm - Cut off time for bike leg. 14mph average for this flat bike course if started on the bike by 8:30am.
  • 2:00pm - Official Results posted for purposes of awards. This is your opportunity to review your own results. Once awards ceremony begins, all results are final.
  • 2:15pm - Post race party/awards. Awards will not be mailed.
  • 2:15pm - Transition area closed.

Race director/management may alter any part or distance of the event as dictated by event day conditions, such as weather.

Refund Policy
No Refunds, No Tranfers, No Deferrals Under Any Circumstances.  

absolutely NO refunds will be made for any reason.  REFERRED TO AS “ENTRY FEES” ABOVE AND INCLUDES ENTRY FEES, PARTICIPANT SHIRTS, UPGRADED PRODUCTS, ANY OTHER AMENITIES, INSURANCE, AND ONLINE ADMINISTRATIVE FEES.  MUST BE PRESENT TO RECEIVE ANY ITEMS as leftovers are distributed on day of race.  WE DO NOT SHIP.  ENTRY FEES CANNOT BE  TRANSFERRED TO OTHER PERSONS OR APPLIED TOWARD future PIRANHA SPORTS EVENTS.  Selling your race entry slot is strictly prohibited by piranha sports.
If you do sell your race slot, you will be disqualified from the race and you, as well as the entrant who purchased your slot, will be unable to race in another Piranha Sports event for a minimum of 2 years. Piranha Sports reserves the right to reject any entry if a valid photo ID is not presented at race packet pick-up.  There is NO rain date for the event.  In cases of inclement weather, natural disaster, acts of God, acts of war or other unforeseen extraordinary circumstances, management reserves the right to cancel the event and/or modify the race course for safety concerns. Under such circumstances, there will be absolutely no refunds or transfer of entries to future Piranha Sports events. Each athlete must accept any such risk of their entry fee paid including other amenities paid for such as participate shirts, upgrade products, insurance, and online administrative fees.  All monies collected are used to develop and produce the event, including all race supplies, staffing, and administration. We pledge to make every effort to produce a fair, safe and exciting event for all.  Management reserves the right to reject or accept a race entry for any reason.  By signing up for this race, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to the terms listed on this page.

Spectator Information
Lums Pond State Park ~ Area #1 offers a large field with ideal spectator areas for watching the swim, transition, bike start and finish as well as run start and finish. Bring the kids and make plans to spend the day at Lums Pond enjoying activities such as fishing, paddle boats, picnic area and playground.

Parking
Spectator (as well as athlete) parking is available at Area #1 and Area #2 at Lums Pond State Park. Parking attendants will be available to assist you with parking. Also, please be aware that once the race begins, the road leading in and out of Lums Pond State Park will be used by participants as it is part of the race course.

Athlete Support
Bring your cow bells, noise makers, posters, banners, and other items to cheer on your favorite athlete. Please keep in mind that spectators are not allowed to provide any outside assistance to the athletes. Outside assistance can result in penalties and possible disqualification. Outside assistance can include but is not limited to: transition area assistance, running or riding along with the athlete (pacing), handing off water bottles, etc. The Piranha Sports staff and volunteers will provide assistance as needed and allowed. As well, there will be no time during the event when spectators will be allowed in the secure transition area. If your athlete forgot an item for the transition area, please ask a Piranha Sports Staff member or volunteer to assist you in getting that item to the athlete.

Spectator Control
The Piranha Sports Staff and volunteers have your athlete’s safety and security as their primary responsibility. Therefore, there may be times during the course of the event that we will need to provide directions to spectators if we feel that the athletes do not have a clear and unobstructed path. Please pay close attention to these directions/instructions so that we are able to maintain the safety of every athlete.

Kids and Dogs
The Piranha Sports Staff loves having kids and dogs at the events. The kids are our future and the dogs are just great. If you do bring your children and/or pets, please keep a close eye on them. Do not allow them to venture onto any of the roadways particularly near the mount/dismount area. As well, if your children bring bikes, please ensure that they are wearing helmets at all times.

Just as a reminder, the food and beverages provided by Piranha Sports are for athletes and volunteers only.

Other Notes
Lums Pond is a State Park and a take-in/take-out policy is in effect. Please be sure to take all trash with you and help keep the park clean.
