Swim Warm-Up and Safety Clinic -

Sign up for this under Additional Options. Piranha Sports has teamed up with Triton Water Rescue, our lifeguard team, AND Bricks Coaching, our Series Coaching Sponsor. Rick Lill, certified lifeguard of Triton and Jess Manning, a Level II USAT Certified Coach of Bricks will be conducting this Swim Warm-Up and Safety Clinic. Following the first timers meeting on the day before, all aprticipants are offerred the opportunity to swim in the same water* they will compete in, learn proper etiquette in the water, and learn proper spotting methods. The intention of this clinic is to make sure that the swim the next day is as safe as possible, help create confidence in participants, and provide the opportunity to get a feel of the aquatic environment they will be racing in the next day. Cost: $15.00

*The swim area may be restricted as to ensure proper supervision for everyone's safety. Lifeguards and race director have full authority to establish swim zones, modify, or cancel as condition(s) and permits warrant. Any athlete who ignores the lifeguards', coach's, or race director's directions, will forfeit their race entry with no refunds.

12 Week Program
  This 12-week training program has been designed to prepare you for the event, and has been prepared by Bricks MultiSport Coaching - www.bricksmultisport.com

It will help provide you with the "Training, Tools & Tips
" necessary to get you where you want to be for your target event whether it be your first or fiftieth.

Race/Event Clinic
  This clinic is scheduled for Saturday, August 18, 2012, 10am at Lums Pond State Park - area #1.  Taught and directed by experienced and certified coaches, and led by USAT Level II & Bricks MultiSport Head Coach, Jess Manning.  Bricks MultiSport Race clinics are a hands-on, Get-Your-Hands-Dirty style of clinic designed to be interactive and get you ready to race! 

Cost for the clinic is $60 ($150 value), runs approximately 2 - 2.5 hrs and comes with the following and many of these topics typically covered:

  • Race strategy
  • Gear options, selections, etc.
  • Bike mounting/dismounting, pacing, cornering
  • Rules, regulations, penalties, etc.
  • Transition layout, skills & more
  • Event location specific & pertinent information
  • Discuss open water strategies & skills (must attend event pre-swim option to get open water swim on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 2:30pm at race site)

Course

SPRINT COURSE:

Swim for sprint is 0.6 miles - in water start.

  • Expected water temperature around 74 degrees.  Wetsuits allowed and optional if water temperature is 78 degrees or less taken on race morning.  Come prepared with a wetsuit just in case. 
  • Swim Cut Off Rule.  All participants are expected to be able to complete the swim discipline maintaining a steady consistent stroke and able to maintain on course.  Lifeguards are provided for emergency situations and to prevent swimmers from drowning.  Any swimmer who is in constant need of aid from lifeguards along the swim is considered to be a hazard to themselves and other swimmers and has not prepared properly for the race (this includes breaks, and redirection on course).  If a lifeguard at any point feels an athlete is taking too much attention, the lifeguard reserves the right to remove the athlete from the race.  This removal will result in a DNF (Did Not Finish) from the entire race (the athlete will not be allowed to compete in the bike or run) at which point athlete must hand in their timing chip to lifeguard or designated staff person. 
  • Start and finish at the boat ramp area.
  • Special transition area available near swim exit.  This area will be available for those who wish to wear sneakers for the 1/4 mile trek from the swim exit to the "regular" transition area.  Please lave your sneakers in this designated area and you may not leave anything behind such as wetsuits, goggles, caps in this special transition area.  Failure to do so will result in a 4 minute penalty.

Bike for sprint is 16 miles - flat and fast.

  • Exit Transition area and head straight onto Route 71 (Red Lion Road)
  • Left onto Chesapeake City Road
  • Right onto Frazer Road
  • Left onto Denny Road.  Sharp turn.  Slow down!
  • Left onto Steele Road
  • Left onto Chesapeake City Road
  • Right onto Route 71
  • Immediately after RR tracks, turn right onto Kirkwood-St. Georges Road
  • Bike turn around for SPRINT bike course at Kirkwood/St. Georges Road Overpass of Route 1.

Run for sprint course is 2 miles around campground loop (out and back).  Stay to the left of each other throughout run.  
 



HALF COURSE:

    • Continue past the sprint turn around location.
    • Right onto Main Street in St. Georges.
    • Left onto Delaware Street in the small town of St. Georges.  Sharp turn.  Slow down!
    • Right onto Cox Neck Road
    • At the light in Delaware City, Left onto Route 9 North
    • At next light near Delaware City Refineries, Left onto Clarks Corner Road.
    • At next intersection of Clarks Corner Road and Cox Neck Road, proceed straight towards St. Georges.
    • Right onto onto Main Street in St. Georges.
    • Left onto Kirkwood-St. Georges Road
    • Left onto Route 71
    • Cross RR tracks and continue onto Route 71 back towards race site. 
    • Repeat the above 2X.
    • Bike water bottle/sport drink  (Gatorade) exchange being planned soon either near TA or other appropriate location.   Throw old and used bottle aside, slow down, and grab bottle while continuing to ride.

  • Run for half - 13.1 miles - New for 2012 as the C&D Canal is under construction by the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers.  We will utilize most of the same course as the original Diamondman Triathlon when it was first established.  The run course consists of a 6.3 mile out and back course which is completed 2x with a .5 mile start and finish segment shown as a dashed line on course map.  The course is mostly shaded and primarily cross country terrain with some crush and run paths and paved roads.  Please plan your footwear accordingly.  Runners should always stay to the left of each throughout the entire run.  Water, gatorade, hammergel planned at about every 1 to 1.5 miles.

  • 7:15am - 1st Wave Half Iron.  All Males; Clydesdales.  Orange Caps.

  • 7:55am - Swim - Approximate Time Sprint Triathlon Starts.

  • 9:45am - Official Results for Sprint Competitors posted for purposes of awards. This is your opportunity to review your own results.  Once awards ceremony begins, all results are final.
  • 10:00am - Post race party/awards for Sprint Competitors.  Awards will not be mailed.
  • 10:00am - Transition area closed for Sprint Competitors.
  • 12:30pm - Cut off time for bike leg.  14mph average for this flat bike course if started by 8:30am.

Refund Policy
No Refunds, No Tranfers, No Deferrals Under Any Circumstances.  

absolutely NO refunds will be made for any reason.  REFERRED TO AS “ENTRY FEES” ABOVE AND INCLUDES ENTRY FEES, PARTICIPANT SHIRTS, UPGRADED PRODUCTS, ANY OTHER AMENITIES, INSURANCE, AND ONLINE ADMINISTRATIVE FEES.  MUST BE PRESENT TO RECEIVE ANY ITEMS as leftovers are distributed on day of race.  WE DO NOT SHIP.  ENTRY FEES CANNOT BE  TRANSFERRED TO OTHER PERSONS OR APPLIED TOWARD future PIRANHA SPORTS EVENTS.  Selling your race entry slot is strictly prohibited by piranha sports.
If you do sell your race slot, you will be disqualified from the race and you, as well as the entrant who purchased your slot, will be unable to race in another Piranha Sports event for a minimum of 2 years. Piranha Sports reserves the right to reject any entry if a valid photo ID is not presented at race packet pick-up.  There is NO rain date for the event.  In cases of inclement weather, natural disaster, acts of God, acts of war or other unforeseen extraordinary circumstances, management reserves the right to cancel the event and/or modify the race course for safety concerns. Under such circumstances, there will be absolutely no refunds or transfer of entries to future Piranha Sports events. Each athlete must accept any such risk of their entry fee paid including other amenities paid for such as participate shirts, upgrade products, insurance, and online administrative fees.  All monies collected are used to develop and produce the event, including all race supplies, staffing, and administration. We pledge to make every effort to produce a fair, safe and exciting event for all.  Management reserves the right to reject or accept a race entry for any reason.  By signing up for this race, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to the terms listed on this page.

Spectator Information
The transition area, run start/finish, and bike bike start/finish is in a field along Route 71 of Lums Pond State Park. It is alongside a busy road (Route 71). It offers a large field with ideal spectator areas for watching the swim (about 1/4 mile away), transition, bike start and finish as well as run start and finish. Bring the kids and make plans to spend the day at Lums Pond enjoying activities such as fishing, paddle boats, picnic area and playground.

Parking 
DO NOT PARK ON ROUTE 71 AS THIS IS A BUSY ROAD.  PROCEED INTO CAMPGROUND AREA TO PARK IN DESIGNATED FIELD FOR EVERYONE'S SAFETY.
Spectator (as well as athlete) parking is available near the campground area. Parking attendants will be available to assist you with parking. Also, please be aware that once the race begins, the road leading in and out of Lums Pond State Park will be used by participants as it is part of the race course.

Athlete Support
Bring your cow bells, noise makers, posters, banners, and other items to cheer on your favorite athlete. Please keep in mind that spectators are not allowed to provide any outside assistance to the athletes. Outside assistance can result in penalties and possible disqualification. Outside assistance can include but is not limited to: transition area assistance, running or riding along with the athlete (pacing), handing off water bottles, etc. The Piranha Sports staff and volunteers will provide assistance as needed and allowed. As well, there will be no time during the event when spectators will be allowed in the secure transition area. If your athlete forgot an item for the transition area, please ask a Piranha Sports Staff member or volunteer to assist you in getting that item to the athlete.

Spectator Control
The Piranha Sports Staff and volunteers have your athlete’s safety and security as their primary responsibility. Therefore, there may be times during the course of the event that we will need to provide directions to spectators if we feel that the athletes do not have a clear and unobstructed path. Please pay close attention to these directions/instructions so that we are able to maintain the safety of every athlete.

Kids and Dogs
The Piranha Sports Staff loves having kids and dogs at the events. The kids are our future and the dogs are just great. If you do bring your children and/or pets, please keep a close eye on them. Do not allow them to venture onto any of the roadways particularly near the mount/dismount area. As well, if your children bring bikes, please ensure that they are wearing helmets at all times.

Post Race Food
Just as a reminder, the food and beverages provided by Piranha Sports are for athletes and volunteers only.
