Event Summary
  • Fun for the entire family!!
  • All races will take place at the North Shore Riverfront Park/Great Lawn along the Allegheny River between PNC park and Heinz Field.
    Participants and spectators will appreciate the exciting backdrops of the beautiful city over the three vital
    rivers in the area.
  • Proceeds of the event benefit Friends of the Riverfront to increase awareness and engagement with the Pittsburgh region's rivers and riverfronts through activities, stewardship and expansion of water and land trails.
  • Join us the day before on Sat., July 30th for the EXPO from 10am to 3pm.  Expo will take place at race site at the North Shore Riverfront Park/Great Lawn along the Allegheny River between PNC park and Heinz Field.

Expo
Join us for the expo on Saturday, July 30th from 10am to 2pm.  Vendors will also be available on the triathlon race date, July 31st from 6:45am to 12 noon. 

Attention Participating Vendors:  You may set up anytime from 8:00am to 9:30am on Saturday, July 30th at the Great Lawn/North Shore Drive next to Jerome Bettis Grill.  Parking available at Gold Lot 2 (there may be a slight charge).  When you arrive, we will show you your location.  Please bring own pop up tent and table.  No electricity provided.  There will be overnight security provided for Saturday, July 30th until race start on Sunday, July 31st.  Athletes will arrive on race day at 5am.  If arriving late, be sure to arrive on race morning before athletes arrive at 6:00am.  Expected completion time after race day event is around 12 noon.

EXPO

From 10am to 2pm on Saturday, July 30th.  At race site at North Shore Riverfront Park/Great Lawn along the Allegheny River between PNC park and heinz Field.

International Distance Triathlon Course

1.5K Swim
The swim course will consist of a 1.5K swim along the North Shore in the open waters of the Allegheny River. Swimmers will enter the water and swim towards the Roberto Clemente Bridge where they will make the turn around and head back towards the exit at the boat ramp near Heinz Field.  Participants will then run into  transition area located in the North Shore Riverfront Park/Great Lawn along the Allegheny River between PNC park and Heinz Field.

40K Bike
After leaving transition, participants will head out to complete the 40K bike course consisting of two fast loops.  Mount on bikes on Art Rooney Avenue and North Shore Drive.  Head right onto North Shore Drive, left onto Dorsett, right onto West General Robinson Street, left onto Mazeroski Way, right onto HOV Lane of I-279, u-turn at end of HOV Lane at Perryville exit, head back towards city on HOV Lane, exit straight onto Reedsdale Street, left onto Dorsett, right onto West General Robinson Street, left onto Art Rooney Ave.  After two laps - Dismount off bikes at same location on Art Rooney Avenue and North Shore Drive.

10K Run
The final portion of the race will consist of a scenic 10K run along the Allegheny River. After leaving transition, participants will run north along the Allegheny River to Millvale and back to finish at the North Shore Riverfront Park.

Sprint Distance Triathlon Course

600 Meter Swim
The swim course will consist of a point to point 600 meter swim along the North Shore in the open waters of the Allegheny River. Swimmers will enter the water at same start as the International Distance Tri (above) and swim downstream towards the exit at the boat ramp near Heinz Field.  Participants will then run into  transition area located in the North Shore Riverfront Park/Great Lawn along the Allegheny River between PNC park and Heinz Field.


20K Bike
After leaving transition, participants will head out to complete the 20K bike course consisting of one fast loop.  Mount on bikes on Art Rooney Avenue and North Shore Drive.  Head right onto North Shore Drive, left onto Dorsett, right onto West General Robinson Street, left onto Mazeroski Way, right onto HOV Lane of I-279, u-turn at end of HOV Lane at Perryville exit, head back towards city on HOV Lane, exit straight onto Reedsdale Street, left onto Dorsett, right onto West General Robinson Street, left onto Art Rooney Ave. After one lap - Dismount off bikes at same location on Art Rooney Avenue and North Shore Drive.

5K Run
The final portion of the race will consist of a scenic 3.1 mile run along the Allegheny River. After leaving transition, participants will run north along the Allegheny River just beyond the I-579 overpass and back to finish at the North Shore Riverfront Park.

Adventure Race

2 Mile Paddle
Participants will start with a 2 mile paddle (using either a kayak or a canoe) and will head up the Allegheny to the turnaround RR track overpass at Convention Center around 10th Street. Participants will make their way back down the river to exit the water at the boat ramp near Heinz Field and make their way into transition area.   Athletes must provide their own kayaks or arrange for kayak rentals.  Please see below about Kayak Rentals. NO TANDEM RACING ALLOWED IN KAYAK AND NO INFLATABLE KAYAKS ALLOWED.  NO STAND UP PADDLES ALLOWED.

20K Bike
After leaving transition, participants will head out to complete the 20K bike course consisting of one fast loop.  Mount on bikes on Art Rooney Avenue and North Shore Drive.  Head right onto North Shore Drive, left onto Dorsett, right onto West General Robinson Street, left onto Mazeroski Way, right onto HOV Lane of I-279, u-turn at end of HOV Lane at Perryville exit, head back towards city on HOV Lane, exit straight onto Reedsdale Street, left onto Dorsett, right onto West General Robinson Street, left onto Art Rooney Ave.  After one lap - Dismount off bikes at same location on Art Rooney Avenue and North Shore Drive.

5K Run

Kayak Rentals

Each individual must furnish their own kayaks or make their own arrangements for kayak rentals.  Piranha Sports and/or Friends of the Riverfront will not be responsible and will not provide kayak rentals.   The race fee does not cover the cost of rentals.

  • Expected water temperature around 77 degrees.  Wetsuits allowed and optional if water temperature is 78 degrees or less taken on race morning.  Come prepared with a wetsuit just in case. 
  • Swim Cut Off Rule.  All participants are expected to be able to complete the swim discipline maintaining a steady consistent stroke and able to maintain on course.  Lifeguards are provided for emergency situations and to prevent swimmers from drowning.  Any swimmer who is in constant need of aid from lifeguards along the swim is considered to be a hazard to themselves and other swimmers and has not prepared properly for the race (this includes breaks, and redirection on course).  If a lifeguard at any point feels an athlete is taking too much attention, the lifeguard reserves the right to remove the athlete from the race.  This removal will result in a DNF (Did Not Finish) from the entire race (the athlete will not be allowed to compete in the bike or run) at which point athlete must hand in their timing chip to lifeguard or designated staff person.

    Saturday, July 30, 2011

    • 10:00am - 2:00pm - Race expo, packet pick-up for age groupers (Sunday racers) and optional bike inspection located at the North Shore Riverfront Park/Great Lawn along the Allegheny River between PNC park and Heinz Field. 
      12:00pm - First Timers Meeting.  Open to all age groupers to become familiar with some basic triathlon rules.
    • BRING YOUR BIKE AND HELMET for optional inspection at early packet pickup.

    Sunday, July 31, 2011

    • 5:00am - 6:30am - Late packet pick-up, body marking, and LAST MINUTE BIKE AND HELMET optional inspections.   No race day registrations.
    • Packet pick-up closes at 6:30am prompt!
    • 6:30am - Pre-race meeting up on the Great Lawn followed by National Anthem.  TRANSITION AREA CLOSED.  ALL ATHLETES (TRIATHLETES AND ADVENTURE RACERS) MUST CLEAR TRANSITION AREA AT THIS TIME AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ENTER UNTIL RACE STARTS (i.e. - when they complete first leg of their event and enter transition).  No exceptions.  Please arrive early to drop off all items and situate yourself for the race.
    • 6:45am - First Wave start for International Distance Triathlon.
    • 6:45am - 1st Wave.  Men 39 and Under in International Distance Tri. Red Caps.
    • 6:48am - 2nd Wave.  Men 40 and Over; Clydesdales in International Distance Tri.  Blue Caps.
    • 6:51am - 3rd Wave.  All Females; Athenas; Relays in International Distance Tri.  Green Caps.
    • 7:24am - Approximate Start of Sprint Triathlon - will start after last International Swimmer passes the start line of Sprint.  Wave Assignments to be Determined. 
    • 7:24am (approximate) - 4th Wave.  Men 39 and Under in Sprint Distance Tri.  Yellow Caps.
    • 7:27am (approximate) - 5th Wave. Men 40 and Over; Clydesdales; Females 24 and Under in Sprint Distance Tri.  Orange Caps.
    • 7:30am (approximate) - 6th Wave.  Females 25 and Over; Athenas; Relays in Sprint Distance Tri.  Pink Caps.
    • 7:55am - Approximate Start of Adventure Race.  Bring your own kayak, pfd's (life jackets), and paddles.  NO TANDEM RACING ALLOWED IN KAYAK AND NO INFLATABLE KAYAKS ALLOWED.  NO STAND UP PADDLES ALLOWED.
    • 7:55am (approximate) - 7th Wave.  All Men; Clydesdales in Adventure Race. 
    • 7:58am (approximate) - 8th Wave.  All Females; Athenas; Relays in Adventure Race. 
    • 10:00am - Musical Performance on the stage by Caleb Lovely until awards begin - www.caleblovely.com
    • 10:30am - Official results posted.  This is your opportunity to review your own results.  Once awards ceremony begins, all results are final.
    • 10:45am - Awards ceremony.  Awards will not be mailed.  
    • 10:45am - Transition area closed.

    Race director/management may alter any part or distance of the event as dictated by event day conditions, such as weather.

    Refund Policy
    No Refunds, No Tranfers, No Deferrals Under Any Circumstances.  

    absolutely NO refunds will be made for any reason.  REFERRED TO AS “ENTRY FEES” ABOVE AND INCLUDES ENTRY FEES, PARTICIPANT SHIRTS, UPGRADED PRODUCTS, ANY OTHER AMENITIES, INSURANCE, AND ONLINE ADMINISTRATIVE FEES.  MUST BE PRESENT TO RECEIVE ANY ITEMS as leftovers are distributed on day of race.  WE DO NOT SHIP.  ENTRY FEES CANNOT BE  TRANSFERRED TO OTHER PERSONS OR APPLIED TOWARD future PIRANHA SPORTS EVENTS.  Selling your race entry slot is strictly prohibited by piranha sports.
    If you do sell your race slot, you will be disqualified from the race and you, as well as the entrant who purchased your slot, will be unable to race in another Piranha Sports event for a minimum of 2 years. Piranha Sports reserves the right to reject any entry if a valid photo ID is not presented at race packet pick-up.  There is NO rain date for the event.  In cases of inclement weather, natural disaster, acts of God, acts of war or other unforeseen extraordinary circumstances, management reserves the right to cancel the event and/or modify the race course for safety concerns. Under such circumstances, there will be absolutely no refunds or transfer of entries to future Piranha Sports events. Each athlete must accept any such risk of their entry fee paid including other amenities paid for such as participate shirts, upgrade products, insurance, and online administrative fees.  All monies collected are used to develop and produce the event, including all race supplies, staffing, and administration. We pledge to make every effort to produce a fair, safe and exciting event for all.  Management reserves the right to reject or accept a race entry for any reason.  By signing up for this race, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to the terms listed on this page.
